KOCHI: Considering the possibility of drought in the Ernakulam district, Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla warned of strict action against residents, institutions and business establishments who waste water supplied by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA).

A meeting of the District Development Committee held here on Saturday, chaired by the Collector, discussed various schemes to minimise the impact of the possible drought.

Legal action, including disconnection of water supply, will be initiated if misuse of the KWA water connection is detected.

It was decided at the meeting that the corpus fund of the Collector would be utilised for drinking water projects, to ensure supply of potable water to all the residents of the district. “In areas where water shortage is reported, the district administration will install water kiosks soon. Considering the possibility of drought, permission has been granted to the KWA to carry out pipe-laying work without security deposit - collected usually while granting permission to crack roads for pipe-laying,” said the Collector.

“Also, a project is under consideration to address water scarcity in the city, under which 4,400 metres of pipe will be laid and an overhead water tank will be constructed near SH College at Thevara. As part of the initiative, the KWA has been directed to file a project report without delay,” he added.

It has also been decided to rectify the snag in the motor at the Tripunithura pump house, which would resolve the water crisis in the area.
