KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the State police to provide adequate police protection to the colleges under Nehru Group of Institutions including Nehru College of Engineering and Research Centre, Pambadi, in the wake of continuous attack against its offices following the alleged suicide of engineering student Jishnu Pranoy.

A division bench of the court directed the State police chief to provide police protection to the life of the students, teachers and staff of the colleges and various properties. It also asked the police to provide protection to the life of the college chairman and other trustees of the college.

The court issued the order on the petition filed by P Krishnadas, chairman of the Nehru Group of Institutions.

An unruly mob of over 1000 persons claiming to be members of the Students Federation of India, the students’ wing of CPM, trespassed into the campus and vandalised the college properties in Pampadi on Monday.

Despite prior intimation and warning that had been conveyed to the police, adequate police protection had not been granted leading to the various acts of vandalism and disruptive behavior on the part of the student union activists, causing the damage of properties, the petition said.
