KUMILY:The police on Tuesday seized a large quantity of electronic and ordinary detonators from a KSRTC bus at the Motor Vehicle Department’s (MVD) checkpost in Kumili, Idukki. Around 25,500 ordinary and 3,000 electronic detonators were found in four bags. Three youths, who boarded the bus from near Cumbum town, and were carrying them gave the police the slip.

The incident took place around 11 am. The detonators were seized from the Tiruvalla-bound Madura-Tiruvalla inter-state service during the routine inspection of Sales Tax officials.

Though the police ruled out any terror angle, they have started intense search for the youths and launched an inquiry into the issue. Idukki SP K B Venugopal said the detonators were brought from Telangana and police have extended the investigation.

“We have already constituted six teams and started massive searching for the youths. We could identify them from the CCTV visuals at the check-post,” he said.

Though the police dismissed terror angle in the incident, the incident assumes importance in the wake of the Centre’s warning to the Kerala Government of a possible terrorist attack on Sabarimala shrine during the pilgrimage season.
