KASARGOD: A major violence broke out here on Wednesday night when the CPM and the BJP workers clashed and set vehicles on fire.  According to the police, the violence started when a group of DYFI workers, who were taking out a march to celebrate the Supreme Court verdict on compensation to endosulfan victims, allegedly attacked a BJP worker.  Later, they burnt a car of another BJP worker. In retaliation, the BJP workers started targeting the CPM workers in the region.

A police team along with fire force rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Senior police officers took stock of the situation and  additional police force has been deployed. Meanwhile, the CPM leaders alleged that the clash erupted after BJP workers started pelting stones at the march. A meeting of the police higher officials with the District Collector will decide whether to clamp prohibitory orders in the town.

The district has been on turmoil during the past couple of days after Sangh Parivar called a hartal on January 3 to protest against the attacks allegedly by CPM activists. The BJP and the RSS had been alleging police excesses on their leaders ever since the LDF government assumed power in the state.
