THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A police case has been registered against Kovalam MLA M Vincent in connection with a woman’s suicide attempt. The case was registered on the basis of a complaint by her husband in which he accuses the legislator of sexual harassment over the phone. The woman consumed sleeping pills in excess on Wednesday afternoon, following which she was admitted to a private hospital at Neyyattinkara. She is a resident of RC Street at Balaramapuram, where Vincent too resides. Her condition is reported to be out of danger.

The Balaramapuram police which registered the case said the woman, 51, is the mother of two. The husband’s complaint says the woman was being harassed by Vincent after he was elected MLA.Whenever she objected to such conversations, he used to resort to verbal abuse.  Balaramapuram sub-inspector Harish said the immediate provocation for the act could be known only after recording the woman’s statement. The recording will be done once her condition improves.  The charges against the legislator include IPC sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 294(b) (using profane language). Meanwhile, DGP Loknath Behera has assigned Kollam City Police Commissioner Ajeetha Begum to lead the probe.

No out-of-the-way relationship with woman, says Vincent
When opponents are trying to draw mileage out of the incident by cornering MLA M Vincent, he told ‘Express’ the woman is known to him but he has no out-of-the-way relationship with her. “I had intervened in the dispute between the woman and her husband some time ago. A rapprochement was realised between them at the police station. She used to contact me over phone thereafter but it was put to an end by myself after coming to know her husband grew suspicious over it and tried to create another issue.
