Attack on Sitaram Yechury escalates CPM-RSS tension in Kerala

Alleging high-level conspiracy behind the attack on CPM general secretary Yechury, the LDF will hold protest meetings at all district headquarters in the State on Monday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The attack on CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury in New Delhi the other day has set off a string of political clashes in the state with back-to-back incidents of CPM-RSS tussle. Alleging high-level conspiracy behind the attack on Yechury, the LDF will hold protest meetings at all district headquarters in the state on Monday.

“Those who attacked the CPM general secretary were slapped with minor sections and released on bail. The government should urgently correct this,” the LDF state committee said, alleging the Delhi Police had turned into  Sangh Parivar followers. The LDF alleged despite a tip-off from the Kerala Police intelligence wing about a possible RSS attack on AKG Bhavan, the Delhi Police chose to ignore it.

“Close on the heels of the Yechury incident, the RSS has been unleashing violence across the state. Bombs were hurled at CPM Kozhikode district committee office targeting party district chief P Mohanan. Party offices were destroyed at several places,” the ruling combine said in a release.

The attack on Yechury found ripples in the state on Wednesday night when the BJP district office at Tutors Lane here was attacked by unidentified persons. Also, a slew of political clashes between the CPM and the BJP were reported from across the state.

Following this, the BJP had called a hartal in the district on Thursday.

According to the BJP brass, around 260 incidents involving violence against BJP/Sangh Parivar establishments were reported from across the state on Wednesday and Thursday. The BJP alleged the CPM has been unleashing violence on the Sangh Parivar.  On the other side, the CPM district committee office in Kozhikode was attacked on Thursday night. The Left leadership  accused the Sangh Parivar of perpetrating the violence.

‘CPM workers should not attack other party offices, says Kodiyeri

The attack on CPM’s Kozhikode district committee office was part of a planned attempt on the life of party district secretary P Mohanan, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Friday. He also asked party activists not to get provoked by the Sangh Parivar and attack other party offices.

The attack on CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, close on the heels of BJP president Amit Shah’s visit to Kerala, cannot be an isolated development, he said. Shah has stated he has certain tricks to win the elections in Kerala. Sensing a larger conspiracy, Kodiyeri said the RSS wants to create political tension by attacking CPM offices.
