Kerala cabinet recommends safety audit in PSUs

The Cabinet also decided to recommend KMML to consider providing jobs to dependents of the three victims. 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet has recommended safety audits in all public sector units in the state. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the incident at the Kerala Minerals and Metals (KMML), Chavara, Kollam, where a bridge over the T S Canal collapsed on October 30, claiming three lives and injuring nearly 50 persons.  

The weekly Cabinet meeting on Wednesday decided KMML should provide Rs 10 lakh as solatium to the kin of employees - Shyamala Devi, Angelina and Annamma - who died in the mishap.  The meeting also appointed a committee led by Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Paul Antony to investigate the accident and a submit a report within 15 days.  The panel will include technical experts also.  This assistance to the families of the deceased employees will be over and above the benefits otherwise due to the family, the government said. 

The Cabinet also decided to recommend KMML to consider providing jobs to dependents of the three victims. The company will be asked to bear the medical expenses of 32 employees who are undergoing treatment. The bridge will be rebuilt with technical assistance from the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation.
