No forced conversions taking place in state: Kerala Women’s Commission

Kerala Women’s Commission (KWC) head M C Josephine on Tuesday said that Sharma’s statement will only tarnish the reputation of Kerala at the national level.

KOCHI: Refuting National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson in charge Rekha Sharma’s remarks forced conversions were rampant in the state, Kerala Women’s Commission (KWC) head M C Josephine on Tuesday said no such incidents were taking place in the state.“Sharma’s statement will only tarnish the reputation of Kerala at the national level,” Josephine told reporters here.

“The NCW chairperson made the statements without understanding or studying the situation prevailing in Kerala. She should have refrained from making such politically motivated and venomous remarks,” she said. Josephine said NCW did not intimate KWC about the chairperson’s visit to Hadiya’s residence in Vaikom and no report has been sought from the state body till now.

She claimed the KWC had so far adopted the right approach in the Hadiya case. “No one can ignore the steps taken by us and speak insensibly against us. The NCW chairperson should have spoken about the issues faced by Hadiya rather than making statements about religious conversions,” she said.
