KOCHI: The Kerala Government has launched an ambitious scheme to provide affordable housing to families belonging to economically weaker sections of society said Minister for Labour and Excise T P Ramakrishnan here on Monday.

"We will soon achieve the target of affordable housing for all in the state. The government has introduced 'Janani' and 'Life' Mission to achieve this goal. He was laying the foundation stone for 'Janani ' scheme at Ponjassery in the city. The scheme aims to provide apartments for labourers in the city. The project is being implemented by Bhavanam foundation under the Labour Department.As many as 296 apartments will be built at Ponjassery and each flat will have 715 sq feet space. The project is expected to be completed by December 2019.

The flats will have a drawing cum dining room, two bedrooms, kitchen and work area with fire safety features, water purification plant and parking area. The department has completed construction of 216 apartments at Adimaly in Idukki as part of the Janani project. The price of a flat is `11 lakh and the distribution will begin soon, the minister said.
