PALAKKAD: Tamil Nadu has agreed to release water from the Parambikulam group of dams into the Aliyar dam following the intervention of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who took up the case with the government of the neighbouring state. It is only from the Aliyar dam that water can be released into the Chitturpuzha for the benefit of farmers in the district.

The Chief Secretary and the secretaries of the Water Resources Department of the two states also held talks with each other. The high-level committee will meet on November 24 to discuss the quantum of water needed for Kerala and other modalities. The discussions held by the Chief  Minister and Water Resources Minister Mathew T Thomas involving the officials of the Water Resources Department decided to take up the issue of violations of the inter-state river water sharing agreement by Tamil Nadu and the non release of water into the Aliyar dam.

Tamil Nadu had to give Kerala a backlog of 4 tmc of water in this water year alone and Kerala has made it clear it is very serious in claiming the rightful share as it was very sincere in releasing water from the Siruvani dam for the drinking water needs of Coimbatore city.
