‘Enact law to prevent fleecing by pvt hospitals’

The State Human Rights Commission has urged the government to enact a piece of legislation to fix the treatment charges in private hospitals.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Human Rights Commission has urged the government to enact a piece of legislation to fix the treatment charges in private hospitals. The demand came close on the heels of the Karnataka Government amending the Private Medical Establishment (Amendment) Act recently.

The Commission asked the Chief Secretary to submit an explanation regarding the law within a month. The Human Rights Commission said it has repeatedly asked the state government to enact a proper piece of legislation to prevent fleecing by private hospitals.

Only a foolproof legislation can end exploitation by private hospitals. Once such a law comes into place, the government will be able to decide the treatment charges. The commission’s order came in the wake of a petition by human rights activist and counsellor of Kochi Corporation Thambi Subramanyam.
