THRISSUR: The CPM organisational report presented by state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on the first day of the state conference has ample ammunition for political debates. Making the move to bring K M Mani’s Kerala Congress to the Left fold amply clear, the CPM organisational report terms LDF expansion essential in the current political scenario. However, a decision on expanding the front should be taken only after discussions within the LDF, says the report. It was only the other day that veteran leader V S Achuthanandan shot off a letter to the party Central leadership against inducting Mani into the LDF fold. In his letter, VS had pointed out the anti-corruption stance taken by the Left Front and the Left agitations against Mani during the UDF budget bedlam.

The CPM report indicates that the party is determined to go ahead with the move despite severe opposition from the CPI. Sources said the CPM is of the view that there is no need to take the CPI’s opposition into consideration. “This is a done thing, as far as the CPM is concerned. This would prove politically correct,” sources pointed out.

Criticism against police

In spite of the Left Government in power, the face of police has not changed, says the report presented by the state secretary. That the police persistently deviate from the Left Government’s policies has been singled out as a matter of concern.

The functioning of the police has been criticised. There are people with different political interests within the police force. The government should be wary about them. Action by such policemen discredit the government and its image. The Home Department should be able to curb this tendency.
As expected, the organisational report leaves major criticism against the CPI.

The report pointed out that many a time the CPI’s actions create an impression that there are differences within the Left Front and the government. The CPI and its state secretary Kanam Rajendran had drawn flak at the CPM district conferences too. The report comes down heavily on the CPI leadership for boycotting the cabinet meet in the Thomas Chandy issue. Certain acts of the CPI give the impression that the collective responsibility of the cabinet has been lost.  The report criticises the minor partner for not following the coalition ethics.

However efforts should be taken to ensure Left unity, says the report.
