KOCHI:  The south west monsoon has brought bountiful blessings for the state after a sizzling summer. While the rains have devastated some parts of the state, the heavy inflow of water to the reservoirs have brought cheers to the State Electricity Board (KSEB).

According to KSEB authorities, almost all the major dams are brimming with water and for the first time in 25 years. Idukki Arch Dam, the power house of Kerala is set to achieve full capacity storage. The water level in the dam has touched 728 m and the authorities have started preparations to open the shutters once the water level reaches the full capacity level of 732 metres. The shutters of the dam were opened last time in 1992.

The water level in almost all reservoirs has crossed the 80 percent mark and with three more months left for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, the authorities are hopeful that all reservoirs will achieve cent percent storage capacity this time.

The KSEB has achieved a record in water storage thanks to the bountiful rains within 45 daus of the arrival of southwest monsoon. The previous record storage was in 2007 -08 when the Board had enough water to generate 3,500 million units of electricity in its reservoirs. But as on Wednesday, the Electricity board has enough water to generate 3,800 million units of electricity.

Considering the huge inflow of water in the reservoirs, the KSEB is utilising its hydel power generators to the maximum capacity. On Tuesday, the total consumption of power in the state was 62 million units of which the contribution of hydel projects was 35 million units. The spillway shutters of reservoirs at Senkulam, Neriyamangalam, Ponmudi, and Lower Periyar have been opened due to the huge inflow of water.
