THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: AICC general secretary Oommen Chandy on Tuesday said the Left Government in the state and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who holds the Home portfolio, have no control over the police.

The former Chief Minister said the ‘over indulgence’ in union activities by police personnel was the main reason for a lack of discipline in the force and this was resulting in them committing acts unheard of in the Kerala society. “At the police association meeting, more than 50 police officers wore red shirts and the Chief Minister was on the dais.

“This clearly was appeasement on the officers’ part and should not be allowed in a disciplined force like the police which is tasked with maintaining law and order,” said Chandy.

He said the UDF regime had full control over the police and there was no lack of discipline. “In the recent Kevin murder case, the police has been a total failure and the role played by some cops in aiding the criminal gang has shocked Kerala.

“This is a clear pointer on what we discussed earlier, regarding the police force’s lack of respect towards their officers owing to the over indulgence in trade union activities which are supported and nurtured by the party in power. This will lead to chaos in the state as the police is for maintaining law and order, not aiding criminals and abetting crimes,” said Chandy.

He said the meeting with AICC president Rahul Gandhi on June 6 and 7 is meant to finalise the new KPCC president and it will be effected immediately. “After that, there will be a total revamp of the party.

Congress will revive its grassroots units, including booth as wells as mandalam committees, post the revamp. It will be the moving force of the party,” Chandy said.
