KOCHI: With the general body of Artists of Malayalam Movie Association (AMMA) set to meet on June 24, grapevine is abuzz with rumours that superstar Mohanlal will be elected as the new president.

According to sources within the film body, the meeting scheduled at Kochi will also select vice-presidents, secretary, general secretary, treasurer and executive committee members of the Association.

Innocent, MP, who is the long-serving president of AMMA since its inception, came under severe criticism last year when he supported actor Dileep during the actor abduction case. Though the actor-turned-politician later apologised, a section of the young actors demanded a change in leadership of AMMA.

It is learnt that the senior actors are in support of making Mohanlal the president. Mohanlal, who has served as AMMA secretary, is equally acceptable to both young and veteran actors. Other front-runners, according to the sources, are actors Mammootty and Sidhique. There are also rumours that some young actors, who came out with harsh statements against Dileep, may face disciplinary actions.
