Human rights council files plaint with SHRC

CHENGANNUR:The cremation of an elderly woman on a public road became controversial in Chengannur. The cremation of the 82-year-old woman was done on a municipal road at Keezhcherimel on Saturday, as she lived in a small house in half a cent.

The Human Rights Protection Council filed a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission in this regard on Monday. Council secretary G Samuel said in his complaint that the local self government misused the funds for crematorium projects.

Chengannur MLA Saji Cheriyan said the government would take appropriate steps to build a crematorium in Chengannur Municipality.“The government is ready to give sufficient funds for a crematorium. Unfortunately, Chengannur Municipality authorities have not yet taken any steps to build a crematorium,” said Cheriyan. He added he will initiate steps for installing a crematorium in Chengannur. BJP district general secretary M V Gopakumar said municipal authorities and the government should take proper steps to build a crematorium at Chengannur.
