KOCHI:The Christians in Mizoram are not against Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan and there won’t be a joint agitation by the Church against him, said Syro-Malabar Church Archbishop Cardinal George Alenchery.

“The opposition against Kummanam need not be political in nature. There are various tribes in Mizoram and they have different opinions. They want a leader from their community to lead the state,” Alenchery told media persons after visiting Kummanam Rajasekharan at the Government Guest House in Kochi on Tuesday. “I don’t think the opposition against Kummanam is political. There is no need to see religion or politics in the protests. As the Governor of Mizoram, Kummanam has the responsibility to bring them under one umbrella and I think he is capable of it,” he said. “The Catholic bishop in Mizoram had participated in the swearing-in ceremony of Kummanam Rajasekharan. I had urged him to extend all cooperation to Kummanam as he is a leader who is tolerant towards all communities,” he said.

“Kummanam started his career as a journalist in Deepika newspaper and we have been friends for decades. India has different religions and cultures and we have to cooperate with each other. We always cooperate with the government in power and Kummanam shares our outlook,” he said. The Archbishop had visited Kummanam to wish him all success in the new role as Governor.

‘Will try to establish Leela Menon Chair’

Kochi: Veteran journalist Leela Menon didn’t get the recognition she deserved during her lifetime, Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan has said. “She had compassion towards the underprivileged and strived for the welfare of the marginalised sections of society. I will try on my personal level to establish a Leela Menon Chair at a journalism institute of national stature,” he said while delivering the keynote address at the Leela Menon commemoration meet organised by the Janmabhoomi daily at Ernakulam Town Hall here on Tuesday. Janmabhoomi managing editor M Radhakrishnan presided over the function. Ernakulam Press Club president B Dileep Kumar said Ernakulam Press Club would establish a Leela Corner on the Press Club premises using the books donated by Leela Menon.
