THRISSUR: Amidst the recent controversy over complaints by police officers regarding superiors’ attitude, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said stringent action would be taken against those higher officials who treat juniors like slaves.

Addressing media persons on Wednesday, Kodiyeri said, “Police officers are being appointed through PSC and they are not entitled to do such household works. The superior officers should behave according to the culture in Kerala, though such systems are rampant in other states. Complaints have been raised against only a few higher officials in Kerala, while the situation is not the same in other states.” He ensured the government would take necessary step to discourage such practices.

“Orderly system was in practice in the Police Department earlier. There were appointments through employment exchange too in the olden days. It has been said that such practices of considering juniors as slaves existed during those times. Since 1980, the appointments to Kerala Police have been conducted through PSC. So, policemen do not have to obey such instructions by the superiors. Each cop should also be aware about that,” he added. He also reminded that IPS officers who join the Kerala cadre should understand the culture of Kerala and act accordingly.
