THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has decided to appoint camp followers through the Public Service Commission. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed to amend the last grade recruitment law and within one month the police appointment rules will be amended. The last LDF Government had brought out an order regarding this but did not amend the rules. As the rules were not amended the recruitment of camp followers through the Public Service Commission was facing roadblocks.

According to Kerala Police Camp Followers Association, there are around 1,200 camp followers of which around 350 are on contract and the rest are permanent. Among this around 10 are women. The association mentions there are more than 2,000 vacancies of camp followers which are to be filled. The basic pay will be around `16,500 and the permanent staff are eligible for a paltry sum as uniform allowance.

With recent developments of senior officers being accused of making camp followers do menial work, the government has decided to conduct the appointment through the Public Service Commission.
The slavery in the Police Department has hogged the headlines following the charges levelled by police driver Gavaskar on the treatment meted out to him at the residence of ADGP Sudesh Kumar.
