‘More new particles expected at CERN’

Scientists working on the ‘God Particle’ (the Higgs Boson) are hopeful that more new particles might show up at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN which might lead to the discovery of super symmetry and dark matter, eminent scientist Prof Durga Prasad Roy said on Monday.

 Speaking at a colloquium on ‘Why Large Hadron Collider?’, organised by the Centre of Excellence in Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (CETMS), set up by  SOA University, on Monday, Prof Roy explained how the LHC was specifically designed to search for new physics signals beyond what had been already observed experimentally.

 The senior scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, said as a first landmark discovery, the LHC at CERN had already identified the Higgs Boson signal, popularly known as the ‘God Particle’.

He said the fundamental description of nature could not be consistent without ‘super symmetry’ which was also called the Fermi-Bose symmetry.

 Prof. Roy, who has made pioneering contributions in Regge Pole Theory, neutrino physics, collider physics, quantum chromodynamics, top quark physics and super symmetric grand unified theories, also provided a history of different accelerators in the world.

 SOA University Vice-Chancellor Prof. RP Mohanty, CETMS Director Prof. MK Parida, professors, faculty members and research scholars were present.
