CUTTACK: Eminent freedom fighter and former Union minister Bibhudendra Mishra passed away at a private hospital due to old age- related ailments here on Wednesday, family sources said.

An associate of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, Mishra (93) is survived by a son and a daughter. His wife Uma Devi had predeceased him.

Born in Kundheibentasahi of Puri, Mishra was the Law minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s second Cabinet. He had participated in the 1942 Quit India Movement and was jailed.

A noted Odia litterateur and lawyer, he had also edited some Odia magazines during his illustrious career as a literary figure in Odia language spanning over seven decades.

Several dignitaries, including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik mourned his death. His death has created a void in the literary circle of the State and country, Patnaik said.
