BHUBANESWAR: As many as 1,112 women were allegedly raped while 12 of the victims were killed after the ghastly crime in 2011. The number stood around 1,045 in 2010 in the State.

 In response to a question from Sibaji Majhi, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who is also in-charge of the Home Department said the total number of atrocities against women has increased from 8,918 in 2010 to 9,659 in 2011.

 While the highest of 76 rape cases were reported from the tribal-dominated Mayurbhanj district, Malkangiri recorded lowest of eight during 2011.

Mayurbhanj district tops the list of rape cases for the last one decade, an official statement said adding that highest 90 rape cases were registered in the district in 2008.

 The rape incidents were gradually increasing in the State which had recorded 753 cases in 2000.
