SAMBALPUR: The scrapping of environmental clearance given to Posco by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has brought cheers for the environmental activists here.
Welcoming the suspension, Water Initiatives Orissa (WIO) in a release stated that Posco would spell doom for the vulnerable coastal ecosystem and also have adverse impact on the water availability in the State by severely putting Mahanadi river in stress.
WIO has urged upon the State Government to stop all construction and related activities of Posco project and review conditions of all such projects already in operation besides those projects in the pipeline. The Government must ensure that all such industries harvest rain water for their production during non-monsoon months, the release stated.
It has also called upon the State Government to ensure that no water meant for drinking, ecology and irrigation be diverted to industries in the State.
