Cash stolen from GPO counter

A CCTV footage came to the rescue of a postal assistant in the Bhubaneswar General Post Office (GPO) as he found out that money from his cash counter was not missing, but in fact stolen.

Hemant Kumar Ojha, a postal assistant at the Bhubaneswar GPO, was perplexed on Saturday night during counting when he found ` 45,000 short. His first thought was that he might have misplaced the money by mistake. On Monday, when the postal officials went through the CCTV footage, they found out about the theft. “The footage clearly showed that three persons had stolen the money,” said another postal assistant, Sharad. The faces of all three are reportedly visible in the footage.

“Hemant was away from his desk for hardly a few minutes. It was during his absence that the culprits entered the cash counter and stole the money,” explained Sharad.

The Kharavela Nagar police corroborated Sharad’s version and said the postal officials have sought a few days to track down the culprits themselves. “If they fail to do so, they will seek our help,” said a police officer.
