2 drug peddlers held

Two persons were arrested by the anti-narcotics cell of Jajpur Police for allegedly possessing two grams of brown sugar worth Rs 30,000.

Cops said the brown sugar was meant to be sold to customers as it was packed in 105 small pouches. Those arrested have been identified as Amar Mohanty of Chandma village and Rajendra Mohanty (35) of Kanheipur under Jajpur police limits.

On a tip off, a special police team nabbed the accused from a hotel near the local railway station on Wednesday evening while they were handing over the contraband to a peddler of Kanheipur. Police also seized a motorcycle, three mobile phones and cash from their possession.  The business is being carried out clandestinely in markets like Vyas Nagar, Kalinga Nagar and its nearby areas.

Local drug peddlers sell brown sugar in pouches of 20 milligrams each costing between Rs 400 and Rs 450 depending on the quality.

Jajpur SP Deepak Kumar said investigation is on to trace out the racket that is involved in this illegal work.

The two were produced in a local court which remanded them in judicial custody.
