CM orders probe into lock-up death

In Patnaik has ordered a high-level inquiry into the death of an accused in police custody in Kabisuryanagar police station.

“Action will be taken against the guilty persons”, Naveen said at Hinjili, about 25 km from here during his brief visit to his Assembly constituency on Friday. Two police personnel, sub-inspector Pratima Behera and constable PK Pradhan, have been suspended by Ganjam SP Asish Singh after a preliminary inquiry, official sources said.

The victim, Dayanidhi Nayak (30) of Khandianai village, attempted suicide in police lock-up by hanging himself from the railing with his towel in Kabisuryanagar police station on Thursday. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died, police said.  Nayak was arrested the same day on charges of kidnapping a 14-year-old girl of Kabisuryanagar, police said. The girl was, however, rescued by police.

The accused attempted suicide before he could be forwarded to court, Inspector-in-Charge of Kabisuryanagar police station SLK Prasad said.

The SP said the incident took place due to negligence of duty and action was likely to be taken against the persons after getting report from the DSP, Human Rights Protection Cell, he said. “I have asked the DSP to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report,” Singh said.
