A woman was arrested on Saturday for allegedly setting afire her stepdaughter at Ambapua village within Kabisuryanagar police limits.

Police said Runu Jena of the village had since long been torturing her stepdaughter Janaki (15) and on Friday prevented her from going to school. When Janaki protested, Runu allegedly tied her with a rope and confined to a room. Runu  later doused Janaki in kerosene and set the girl afire. Hearing her scream, though neighbours rushed to the spot and took the girl to Kabisuryanagar PHC, doctors declared her brought dead.

Receiving information, police nabbed Runu. She was produced before Kodala JMFC Court which remanded her in judicial custody.
