Violence mars Ekamra college campaign

The ‘What I Stand For’ proceedings at Ekamra College were halted midway after tension ensued between two rival groups on Thursday. College union elections will take place on Friday.

Sources said when Plus 2 candidates were speaking on their stand, students of the rival party started throwing water pouches and stones at them.

The students who heard a loud sound, guessed it to be a crude bomb. As tension escalated, the college authorities were forced to stop the event.

“We want the elections to take place smoothly and peacefully. So we cancelled the event before it could

get any worse,” said an  official of the Ekamra College.

It was later found that it was not a crude bomb, but fire crackers that some students had burst.

The ‘What I Stand For’ in other colleges of the city went off smoothly. The college authorities have made necessary arrangements for the election. Sufficient police forces have been provided to all the colleges from Thursday.

Even Utkal University (UU), where elections have been cancelled for this year, got its own set of police forces as a precaution.
