‘Stronger plan needed for wetlands conservation’

Stronger policies and support from the policy-makers are necessary for conservation of the wetlands in the world, Secretary-General of Ramsar Convention Anada Tiega said here on Saturday.

On his maiden visit to India and also Chilika, Tiega spoke about the need for conservation, restoration and regular monitoring of the wetlands. Citing the restoration practices implemented by CDA, Tiega said, “The case studies of Chilika have helped in creation of a new management plan to look after the lake’s restoration work and learn from the previous loopholes.” He added that a strong framework of policies was required to tackle global warming.

Stressing judicious use of resources, he said exploiting the finite resources of nature must be avoided at all costs and appreciated the efforts taken by the Government to impart education to the children in the regions surrounding Chilika.
