A woman died and a man suffered multiple injuries in two separate incidents of elephant attack at Radhadeipur village under Gondia police station in the district on Sunday.

The woman, Bina Jena (55), was going along with her husband Sankarshan Jena, principal of Mahima Mahavidyalaya, in the village in the morning when the tusker attacked her from behind. She fell down on the ground and was admitted to district headquarters hospital where she succumbed a few hours later. The couple could not see the elephant due to dense fog. In a similar incident, Rabi, a farmer of the same village was going on a bicycle to his farmland when he could not see the tusker which attacked him. He sustained injuries and was admitted to district headquarters hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. A team of forest officials led by DFO PK Sahu rushed to the victims’ houses and sanctioned `10,000 for the family of the deceased while `15,000 would be given in two instalments.
