Booty-Seized

Precious antique jewellery belonging to Kanika Royals that were stolen a few days back were recovered by Commissionerate Police on Thursday. Three persons including two women have been arrested and the loot worth over ` 50 lakh has been seized from their possession.

Police said the jewellery comprising antique gold, diamond and silver ornaments along with a Swiss watch worth ` 2 lakh alone were stolen from the house of the royal descendant Jayanti Samantray at Srivihar Colony on June 6.

The burglary was carried out in the evening when Jayanti and family had left home for a function. On returning, they found the valuables stolen by thieves who had entered by breaking through the skylight.

On the basis of the complaint filed by Jayanti, police launched its investigation and nabbed Tulasi Das (35), Mamata Pradhan (45) and Sunil Pradhan (23) from a house at Stewartpatna under Lalbag police limits. The entire stolen items were recovered from them.

DCP Praveen Kumar told mediapersons that the theft was masterminded by Tulasi who had been a maid in Samantray’s house. After serving for more than seven years, Tulasi, who hailed from Santrapur in Dhenkanal district, had recently been sacked.

She had then turned against the family and roped in her cousin Mamata and son Sunil, who have previous criminal antecedents, to carry out the theft.

Having knowledge about valuables and places they were kept, the trio successfully pulled off the crime. The three were produced in the court.
