In order to streamline traffic management in Angul town, the municipal administration and police chalked out various measures at a meeting with the members of different associations of merchants and bus owners on Tuesday.

The administration has decided to clear road encroachment in the town. The street vendors and shop-keepers have been asked to refrain from blocking the roads or else they would face stern action.

Municipal Chairman Akshaya Samant said, “We have decided to create vending zones in the town so that the traffic problems caused by encroachment can be solved. The vendors would be allowed to do their business at the specified zone.” It has also been decided to create a separate parking area for the vehicles which are at present parked near the bus stand and markets. “Cars would be parked in Kadam Padia and auto-rickshaws in front of the block office,” he said. Heavy vehicles would not be allowed to pass through the town between 6 am and 9 pm and traffic signals would be installed at the junctions of Hulurisingha, Bazaar, Similipara and Harimauri, he added.

Meanwhile, the DGP has agreed to provide a traffic Sub-Inspector and some constables for Angul which has no sanctioned post of traffic personnel. “A Sub-Inspector, one havildar and seven constables will be recruited for traffic duties in the town. Earlier, the traffic management was made by police. We have also decided to strictly enforce use of helmets initially on the road from Raj Chowk to police station to create awareness among the public,” said SP Narasingh Bhol.
