Deprived of Stipend, Student Ends Life

PARLAKHEMUNDI: Sunita Raita, a student of Capital Nursing college in Bhubaneswar, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence at R Udaygiri in Gajapati district on Wednesday.

Sunita’s parents alleged that she took the extreme step as she did not get her stipend from Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Parlakhemundi, for the last 16 months despite repeated requests.

Sources in the ITDA office said Sunita’s name was sponsored for admission to Mothers Nursing College in Bhubaneswar, but she joined Capital Nursing College on her own choice due to which there was delay in releasing the stipend.

However, after Sunita approached the authorities on Monday, the ITDA officials started corresponding with the college for releasing her stipend.

An unnatural death case was registered and investigation is on.
