Another Elephant Carcass Found

ANGUL: Barely a month after a female elephant was found dead in Gopiballavepur under Chhendipada forest range of Angul division, a tusker was found dead from the same spot on Tuesday night. Villagers spotted the carcass on Wednesday morning and informed forest officials.

Postmortem on the carcass was performed but the reason behind death is not known yet. The tusker was aged around 12 years.

Locals, on the other hand, alleged that the death might be due to electrocution.

A month back, a female elephant died near the spot when she entered a dry pond in search of water. In the last six months, at least six elephants died in the Angul division for various reasons.

Wildlife activists expressed concern over the rising incidents of elephant deaths under Angul division in the recent months and sought intervention of higher authorities of Forest Department. Efforts to contact Angul DFO yielded no response.
