Bank customer killed as security guard's gun goes off

The victim was at the bank to withdraw cash when the bullet hit his right hand and thigh.

CUTTACK: In a freak mishap, a 65-year-old man was killed when a bank security guard's rifle accidentally went off while he was checking the trigger, on Wednesday.

The incident happened at the Kendupatna branch of State Bank of India under Salepur police limits. The victim, retired State government employee Trilochan Samal from Khandagaon was at the bank to withdraw cash when the bullet hit his right hand and thigh.

Prashant Kumar Majhi, the inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Salepur, said he died on the way to SCB Medical College and Hospital due to excessive blood loss. “It happened due to the carelessness of the security guard, as the rifle’s trigger was not locked while he was checking the firearm,” he said.

The security guard, Rajendra Malla, has been arrested and further investigation is on. A case has been registered under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC.
