BALANGIR: A team of district officials will visit Hyderabad to rescue the newborn, who has been kept hostage by a brick kiln owner. A decision in this regard was taken by Collector Ashish Thakre on Saturday.

A Kalahandi-based activist Dillip Kumar Das had filed a petition before the National Human Rights Commission highlighting the plight of the parent of the newborn.

Das said Bishnu Banchhor of Baghjharan in Balangir district and his pregnant wife Bhumika were taken to Ghatakeswar village near Hyderabad by a labour contractor to engage them in a brick kiln.

On February 25, Bhumika delivered a baby boy at a hospital in Secunderabad. Bhumika died due to postpartum complications two days later. As the brick kiln owner had paid Rs 11,500 for her treatment, he took away her ornaments. With dues pending, the hospital authorities allegedly kept the child with them.

The kiln owner reportedly told Bishnu that he can get back the baby after joining work. Das requested the commission to take cognisance of the matter and do justice to Bishnu, who has been victimised.
