5935 rape cases in 3 years

A total of 175 women have become victims of objectionable videos going viral in Odisha in the last three years even as 5,935 rape cases were reported during the period.

BHUBANESWAR: A total of 175 women have become victims of objectionable videos going viral in Odisha in the last three years even as 5,935 rape cases were reported during the period.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik informed this in the Assembly in written replies to questions from Tara Prasad Bahinipati (Cong). He said 42 cases of incidents of objectionable videos of women going viral have been registered in 2015, while 40 cases of cyber crimes were registered in 2016. Such incidents increased in 2017 with 93 cases registered by September-end.

The Chief Minister said, 1261 cases of cyber crime were recorded during the period.This included 871 cases of bank fraud involving over `9.84 crore, he said and added that help of cyber experts from neighbouring states will be taken if required to solve these cases.

He said, out of 2,286 cases reported in 2015, 109 were of gang-rape. Similarly, 2144 cases including 96 cases of gang rape were reported in 2016 while 1505 rape cases and 83 gang-rape cases have been registered by September-end, he said and added that chargesheets in 3,040 rape cases have been filed in the last three years.
