Sewerage plants in all DHHs soon

The State Government has planned to construct sewerage treatment plant (STP) at the district headquarters hospitals (DHHs) following a directive of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has planned to construct sewerage treatment plant (STP) at the district headquarters hospitals (DHHs) following a directive of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The central body has asked the State Government to create a separate effluent treatment plant for all hospitals having 100-bed or more.

In view of the rise in inflow of patients, the health administration is focusing on the proper management of the biomedical wastes. The treatment plants are expected to be set up in next one year to treat the liquid waste.
An official said the Engineer-in-chief (Public Health) has been asked for base line survey of the hospitals for the project and submit a report mentioning the detail estimate.
“He has been asked to provide the list of hospitals, find out quantity of waste discharged from the medical institutions, existing facilities for waste treatment, assess the capacity of the STP in each health units as per their respective bed strength and prepare the detailed project report (DPR),” he said.

Sources said the treatment plant will be set up to treat the liquid waste generated from various laboratories, operation theatre and ancillary units of the hospital. All departments and labs will be connected through pipes while the liquid waste will be passed through the STP before it is released into drains.

The STP will treat waste water and other forms of liquid waste, which includes water generated from washing floors, vehicles or scrubbed liquid effluent. According to the CPCB, the infected sewage generated in a hospital is prone to three kinds of contamination - bacterial, nuclear and chemical wastes, which has to be disinfected at the source to avoid its mixing with general municipal waste.
Meanwhile, the Engineer-in-chief (Public Health) has written to the Director (Public Health) seeking financial assistance for preparation of DPR at preliminary stage. Citing that the DPR will be prepared through private agencies, the Public Health Engineering Organisation has demanded `1.7 crore.
