Blaze mishap at Nalco plant

A fire broke out at Nalco Captive Power Plant (CPP) on Tuesday in which a generator transformer worth `10 crore was completely damaged. However, no injuries or casualties were reported in the mishap.

Four fire tenders toiled for hours to control the blaze which broke out at Unit-8 of the power plant. Short circuit is said to be the reason behind the fire.
The fire was first reported at the generator transformer in Unit-8 at around 1 pm. As the fire spread rapidly, panic gripped the workers and executives. Nalco authorities informed the fire tenders which rushed to the spot and controlled the blaze by 4 pm. However, the transformer was completely gutted in the mishap, sources said.

Unit-8 of the power plant had resumed operations only 15 days back after its renovation at a huge amount of money.Nalco CPP has 10 120 MW units but only seven are in operation. It provides uninterrupted power supply to the smelter plant here. When the mishap took place, all seven units were in operation.
A Nalco official dismissed the mishap as a minor one and said the fire was controlled immediately. He claimed that the fire mishap had no effect on power generation or aluminium production.
