Child marriage stopped in Odisha

KENDRAPADA (ODISHA): Child rights activists, civil officials and police personnel intervened and prevented a child marriage in Kendrapara district of Odisha, an official said today.

The activists and officials prevented the child marriage at Silapokhari village under the jurisdiction of Rajnagar police station on Tuesday last.

A 15-year-old girl was supposed to get married to a 21-year-old man of the same village on that day.

"Some locals informed the district unit of child welfare committee about the child marriage," said Alyala Bal, a member of the district child welfare committee.

"We rushed to the site along with police and stopped the marriage despite strong protests from the parents and relatives of both the boy and the girl," Alyala Bal said.
