Teacher killed in mishap with police patrol vehicle

BHUBANESWAR: Tension prevailed in Champua after a patrolling vehicle of Joda Police knocked down a teacher killing him on the spot at Chimila Square on Friday evening. When the accident took place, Joda IIC Sumit Soren and an SI were in the vehicle.

The deceased was identified as Harihar Mohanta who was on his way home from Banka High School when his bike was hit by the police vehicle. Such was the impact that the teacher was thrown into the air. He succumbed to injuries at the spot.

Though the patrolling vehicle was damaged, it took the teacher to Champua Hospital where Mohanta was declared dead. The incident led to tension as locals demanded compensation and a job for the kin of the deceased.

Keonjhar SP Rajesh Pandit said driver of the vehicle was arrested following the incident.The patrolling vehicle was brought to Champua Police Station. It was a hired vehicle which was used in police duty. A private company had provided the vehicle along with the driver.
