Raid on FMCG stores for GST violation

BHUBANESWAR: THE sleuths of Weights and Measures Department on Thursday raided some shopping malls dealing with FMCG in the Capital City following allegations of not tagging new prices after GST was implemented.

Sources said while price of several goods has reduced since July 1, the malls are still selling packaged goods at the old price defying the norms issued by the GST Directorate. Earlier, the Centre had directed all traders to update the price and sell the packaged goods with new price tag.
“But, we found many goods were being sold with the old price tag and at a higher price. We have asked the mall authorities to paste revised price tag along with the old one so that the consumers can know the difference. They have been warned of action if they do not follow it religiously,” said an official who was a part of the raiding team.

Two major FMCG stores have been issued showcause notices. Meanwhile, the GST Directorate has been conducting outreach programmes to make people and traders aware about the impact of the new tax regime.
