Live wire claims life of two women workers

In a heart-rending incident, two women labourers died and two others sustained injuries after a high voltage wire fell on them in Ganapalli village of Aagalpur block area here on Monday.

BALANGIR: In a heart-rending incident, two women labourers died and two others sustained injuries after a high voltage wire fell on them in Ganapalli village of Aagalpur block area here on Monday. The deceased were identified as Rebati Sahu and Damayanti Sahu.

As per reports, the victims, all daily wagers, were working in a farm field when an overhead 11-KV wire snapped and fell on them. While Rebati and Damayanti died on the spot, two other injured women, Tapisa Sahu and Rashmita Sahu, were rushed to district headquarters hospital in a critical condition.
The district Red Cross unit has provided `20,000 each to the kin of the deceased.

Meanwhile, following the mishap, an activist Dillip Kumar Dash filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission seeking immediate intervention in the matter.

In the petition, Dash accused the Energy department authorities of the area of gross negligence and said they do not care to maintain wires and poles which are a threat to human life.

Seeking justice for the kin of the deceased, the petitioner urged the Commission to direct the State Government to pay a compensation of `20 lakh each to next of kin of the two deceased and `5 lakh each to the injured victims.
