BHUBANESWAR:THE Chilika Development Authority (CDA) on Friday demolished illegal gheris over 2,000 hectares as part of its ongoing drive against encroachment in the 1,100 sq km brackish water lagoon.

Three excavators were used in the eviction drive. So far, gheris over 5,000 hectares have been demolished by the CDA in the last 15 days with the help of local police and Revenue Department officials. Other than Chilika block, the drive is also focussed on clearing areas around the 15 sq km Nalabana Bird Sanctuary.
“Reconstruction of the gheris would be difficult as the entire encroachments are being uprooted and destroyed,” Chief Executive Sushanta Nanda said.
