Summer respite: no power outage

The State Government on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of load-shedding during summer as water level in most of the hydel power project reservoirs is in a comfortable position due to a normal monsoon.

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of load-shedding during summer as water level in most of the hydel power project reservoirs is in a comfortable position due to a normal monsoon.

This was stated by Energy Minister Pranab Prakash Das in the Assembly while replying to a question from Debasis Nayak of the ruling BJD.

"As per the data received from the Grid Corporation of Odisha (Gridco), most of the water reservoirs have adequate water due to normal rainfall during this monsoon. Therefore, chances of power cut in the State during summer are very remote," Das said.

The Minister said a contingency plan has been put in place ahead of the summer in order to avoid power cut in both urban and rural areas. He said additional power requirement during the summer will be met by procuring electricity from different sources through power banking system.

"We have made arrangement to get about 100 MW of power from other States through power banking mode in the month of April, May and June when Odisha's requirement is more due to summer," he said.

Gridco had supplied additional power to some States in the month of January, February and March with the understanding that these States will meet the additional power requirement of Odisha during exigencies, he added.

The Minister further informed the House that power distribution companies have been asked to store required number of transformers and other equipment ready to meet any emergent situation during summer season.
