Ruckus in Odisha Assembly over hike in MSP

Speaker had to adjourn the House eight times during the day due to the pandemonium and business could be transacted only for 18 minutes.

BHUBANESWAR: Question hour was washed out for the eighth consecutive day on Friday and the Assembly witnessed noisy scenes for rest of the day as Congress and BJP members created a ruckus demanding discussion on the resolution for increasing minimum support price (MSP) on paddy and opposing power tariff hike.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, opposition members rushed to the well shouting slogans. Even as Speaker Niranjan Pujari announced that a discussion would be held on the Government’s resolution on the MSP for paddy immediately after the question hour on Saturday, opposition members created noisy scenes demanding a a debate on the matter.

The Speaker had to adjourn the House eight times during the day due to the pandemonium and business could be transacted only for 18 minutes.

Pujari said he had received a notice of resolution from Agriculture Minister Pradeep Kumar Maharathy on the proposal to hike MSP on paddy from `1470 to `2800 per quintal and the BAC has decided that the matter would be discussed on Saturday.

Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra or any other MLA from the opposition political parties had not attended the BAC meeting, which was held a few days back, as a mark of protest. The House passed the demand for grants of Rural Development Department amidst the pandemonium.
