SAMBALPUR: Tension gripped VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla after a patient died allegedly due to medical negligence on Wednesday.

The patient, Namita Pal (55), was admitted to Cardiology Department of VIMSAR on Monday with multiple issues. She died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday morning. But her husband, Laxmidhar Pal, accused the doctors and medical staff of negligence and held them responsible for her death. Laxmidhar, family members and his colleagues from VSSUT entered into a heated argument with doctors and medical officer leading to a scuffle.

Laxmidhar said had the doctors advised them earlier, they would have shifted Namita elsewhere. He accused the PG students of beating up people who had gathered at the department following the incident.

On the other hand, the doctors and medical staff refuted the allegation. Two separate cases have been registered by Burla police over the incident.

VIMSAR Post-Graduate Students Union president Balabhadra Samantray said Namita had high blood pressure, was diabetic besides being a cardiac patient. Though all possible treatment was provided, she died of cardiac arrest. He accused the family members of trying to vandalise the equipment in the Cardiology Department and said they would request the authorities to strengthen security inside VIMSAR further.
