JEYPORE: Hundreds of villagers of Borrigumma block on Friday staged a demonstration in front of the block office demanding water facilities in their areas.

Shouting slogans against the block and RWSS officials, they alleged that Malda, Purniaguda, Ghatualguda, Bandaguda, Taraguda and Semiliatal villages of the block are reeling under acute water scarcity as the traditional water bodies have already dried up.

On the other hand, borewells and piped water supply system in several villages have been lying defunct since long. Earlier, the villagers had drawn the attention of the block and RWSS officials to repair and restore the water supply system in their areas but in vain.

At present, women have to walk several miles to get potable water from river, pits, small ponds and streams every day. However, official sources said the water crisis in the block got aggravated due to non-functional solar power linked to water supply projects.

The block and RWSS officials have already informed the higher officials for getting the water supply projects repaired and restored, they said. Later, the villagers submitted a memorandum to the BDO demanding immediate steps.
