Sambalpur cops clueless, dejected parents threaten self-immolation

Nearly two months have passed since a newborn had been stolen from the District Headquarters Hospital, but police continue to remain clueless about the missing boy.

SAMBALPUR:Nearly two months have passed since a newborn had been stolen from the District Headquarters Hospital, but police continue to remain clueless about the missing boy.

The delay has left the parents, Gitanjali and Anirudha Majhi,  hopeless and they are now contemplating to end their lives. They said, “We feel like ending our lives for failing to protect our newborn. We plan to immolate ourselves outside the collectorate to draw the attention of the district administration, which has failed to comprehend our plight.”

Gitanjali, who refuses to leave the hospital till she gets her child back, has been shifted to a cabin from gynaecology ward of the DHH. She fears the matter would be suppressed once they leave the hospital premises.

Although the police had formed a special squad and police stations across the district and the State have been alerted, no headway has been made in the child theft case.

The footage of CCTV camera in the DHH has captured a woman wearing a yellow sari and covered with a shawl going out of the hospital coinciding with the time when the child was stolen, but poor quality of the clipping has been of little help to the police. Sambalpur SP Akhilesvar Singh said, “We are still working to trace the baby and have exhausted almost all ways to deal with such cases. Unfortunately, we have not met with success yet.”   However, Singh said he was  hopeful of some outcome and added that special squads formed for the purpose are on the job.
