1st annual monitoring of Chilika today

The first annual monitoring of the 1100 sq km Chilika lagoon would be carried out on Saturday by Chilika Development Authority (CDA).

BHUBANESWAR: The first annual monitoring of the 1100 sq km Chilika lagoon would be carried out on Saturday by Chilika Development Authority (CDA).The survey is aimed at finding out the number, range and distribution of birds, dolphins, sponge as well as reconstruction of gheries in the brackish water lake. As many as 28 teams would conduct the survey from 6 am till 12 noon. Chief Executive of CDA Susanta Nanda said all fishing and tourist boats have been requested not to play during the survey period while tourists have been urged not to visit the lake.

The 28 survey teams would comprise officials from CDA, Chilika Wildlife Division, PCCF (Wildlife) office, NGOs, members of Boat Owners Association, Wildlife Warden Khurda and wildlife lovers of adjoining areas. Results of the monitoring are expected to be declared on February 25. “The results will help CDA manage Chilika lake better,” Nanda said.
